Desktop or Laptop? Here's How We'd Actually Answer That

This might be the question we get asked more than any other in the shop, and there's no single right answer — it really comes down to how you live and work, not which machine is "better" on paper.

If you care about performance for your money

A desktop will almost always out-perform a laptop at the same price point. The parts are bigger, cheaper to make, and easier to cool, so your budget stretches further. If you're doing anything demanding — heavy editing, gaming, running several programs at once — a desktop gets you there without spending extra just for the privilege of it being portable.

If you actually move around

This one's obvious, but worth saying: if you work from more than one place, or you're a student going between home and college, a laptop wins, full stop. No amount of desktop performance matters if you can't take it with you.

What people don't think about — upgrading later

Desktops age better than most people expect, mainly because you can upgrade them piece by piece instead of replacing the whole thing. Need more RAM two years from now? Add it. Storage running low? Add a drive. Try doing that with most modern thin laptops and you'll find half of them aren't upgradeable at all anymore.

And repairs

Desktop parts are more standard, so repairs tend to be faster and cheaper. Laptop repairs can take longer simply because everything is packed in tighter and components are often specific to that exact model.

So, which one?

If you've got a fixed desk and want the most power for your rupee — desktop. If you need one machine that goes everywhere with you — laptop.
